There is a lot to be thankful for in life… and unfortunately we tend to stew and get angry over the things that we still do not have. What most of us fail to realize is if you have a roof over your head, food on the table, a bed that you can sleep in and water to drink, you are doing better than majority of the population of this planet.
What happens is that we take the small things for granted, we don’t fully appreciate them because this is something that we are either supplied with, or something that is normal of our culture. We grew up living in houses with air conditioning and TV’s in every room and and and, we ignore the fact that there are others in this world who have none of this, no roof, no food, no water and no real beds. Sure, you can do like most people and tune them out because they don’t live anywhere near you or your country, but that doesn’t eliminate their existence in this world, or their problems.
You see the hash tag #firstworldproblems and it is usually shown with something like “my parents told me I’m not allowed to have an IPhone, I mean I’m 13 come on!!! #firstworldproblems”. This hash tag has always bothered me because it makes people look materialistic and honestly somewhat dumb. You are 13 and complaining about not having the latest version of the IPhone where in other countries, IPhones don’t even exist. Maybe it’s my passion for helping others that glorifies my feelings on this issue, or maybe it’s just my open-mindness and ability to see the world for what it really is and the problems that it does have… either way, I can’t help but become angry at the lack of thought behind this hash tag.
I’ll admit, there are times where I tend to take things for granted, but after some days I realize that these are the things that I should be the most thankful for! Maybe I don’t make a lot of money at work, but I have a job, I ate today, I’m sleeping in my bed, in a room with a roof, security and safety all here and in a space that I can call mine. There is no better feeling in the world than realizing this and maintaining this gratefulness each and everyday! If you are grateful about the small things in life, can you imagine how you will feel with the big things come your way?
No matter how good or bad you have it, wake up each day thankful for your life and what you have. Someone somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs.
